Allergies & Dietary Requirements
At Dream Childcare, children’s health and safety is our highest priority. We understand that allergies can be serious and sometimes life-threatening, and we take every precaution to ensure children with allergies are cared for safely, confidently, and inclusively.
Working in Partnership with Parents
We believe strong communication with parents is essential in managing allergies effectively. From the very beginning, we ask families to share detailed information about their child’s allergies, triggers, symptoms, and required treatment.
We work in partnership with parents by:
-
Holding an initial meeting to discuss the allergy and agree on a clear care plan
-
Requesting written medical confirmation where appropriate
-
Ensuring all prescribed medication (e.g. antihistamines, inhalers, EpiPens) is in date and accessible
-
Reviewing allergy information regularly and whenever there are changes
-
Maintaining open, ongoing communication about any concerns, incidents, or updates
Parents are our experts on their child, and we value their knowledge and guidance in ensuring the best possible care.
Individual Allergy Profiles
Every child with a diagnosed allergy has a detailed Individual Allergy Profile which includes:
-
A clear photograph of the child
-
The specific allergen(s)
-
Signs and symptoms to look out for
-
Step-by-step actions to take in the event of a reaction
-
Emergency contact details
-
Location of medication and instructions for use
These profiles are shared confidentially with all relevant staff to ensure everyone is fully informed and confident in responding appropriately. Allergy information is also displayed discreetly in food preparation areas where necessary to prevent cross-contamination.
Safe Practice in Our Setting
To minimise risk, we:
-
Carry out thorough risk assessments
-
Follow strict food preparation and hygiene procedures
-
Clearly label and separate food items where required
-
Adapt activities to ensure children with allergies can participate safely
-
Ensure all staff receive regular training in allergy awareness and emergency response
Our aim is to create a safe, inclusive environment where every child can thrive — and where parents feel reassured that their child’s health needs are understood, respected, and carefully managed every day.
